In a few episodes – too few, if you ask me! – you can see a frosted glass star pendant lamp hanging in Hutch’s greenhouse. There are two different versions: in the tag of “Iron Mike “(02-12), it’s a really beautiful one with 18 long points, but in the Season 3 episodes it is replaced with a more clunky 7-point star, best seen in “Hutchinson for Murder One” (03-19).
Also called Moravian/Mexican/Moroccan star pendants, the most beautiful versions of these lamps, like the one in “Iron Mike”, seem to be mostly available in the US, and they’re pretty expensive, too. The 7-point version seems even harder to find (actually, haven’t come across a single one like that).
What happened to Hutch’s first star pendant? My head canon is that he breaks it while moving a ladder around in the greenhouse, the klutz that he is. Or possibly it involved an enthusiastic Starsky, armed with a baseball bat or basketball. š
(The photo above is from an eBay sale. It looks almost exactly like the one from “Iron Mike”.)
Wow, I never noticed the pendants were different. I like the 18-point one better. Pottery Barn sells a similar one for $199 which I really want to get, but I don’t have anywhere to put it š¦

Here’s where I got the photo from on eBay, a tiny crack on it, but it’s only $99:

I’d get that one myself if shipping it to Finland didn’t cost $150 (!!!) and if there weren’t import charges to consider on top of that! And I’d probably have to get some re-wiring done on it, too… š And actually, 18 inch diameter is a little too big for where I’d want to put it. So I keep hoping I’ll find a smaller one on this side of the pond…

Wow, that’s a lot for shipping! So I decided to go down the shipping cost rabbit hole, LOL, and was just looking at the shipping calculator on eBay and it’s over $100 to ship it almost everywhere in the world!
It says $196.52 to ship from the US to China, which is crazy because the lamp was probably made in China and shipped to the US for almost nothing. I’ve had stuff shipped to me in the US directly from China that cost practically nothing to ship.

Oookay. That’s some special shipping!
They say the lamp is made in Mexico, which I’m prone to believe as those things are so hard to find outside North America. If only it were made in China, then I’d probably be able to order one from there with free shipping, too!

The fallback explanation for anything missing, damaged or replaced at Hutch’s is “the bad guys did it”.

Very true! But Hutch often wants to blame Starsky…

CRASH!
Hutch (from the bathroom) “What was that?!”
Starsky (hiding bat under the couch and sitting down) “Wow! Did you feel that earthquake? What was what? Oh, that noise? Dunno, it came from out there and I’m in here. Maybe that earthquake knocked over some plants?”

These stars are also very common in Germany where DS grew up. And in a recent vid he made, he has a Moravian star ornament on his Christmas tree in his house in London. Which is in his conservatory, aka greenhouse. So I’m thinking he chose the decorations in Venice Place.

Good point! I seem to remember articles (somewhere? from the 70s?) where DS complained how boring Hutch’s apartment was in the early S1 eps. Don’t remember if it was actually said that he got to pick how to make it better, but I’ve understood it was more his style by S2. But I never made the connection between his time in Germany and the star lamp here, even though I desperately googled for Moravian stars in German webshops to find something like the lamp closer to here – no luck. *wanders there again to check if the situation has changed*
